1. Avoid distractions.

Yes, this means your cell phone. Do not text and drive. There are more cars on the road than ever during the holiday season, your text to friends and family can wait. It is important to remember that even just reading a single text message can be considered extremely dangerous. Reading one standard text at 55mph amounts to driving the length of an entire football field. It is not worth the risk.

2. Check weather conditions

This is a big one that some may forget while in the hustle and bustle of the holidays. Always check to see what is on the radar. Make sure your car is suited to handle the conditions. Follow the below tips to make sure you are at your best:

• FOG: make sure to turn on your fog lights, also referred to as low beam lights. Be careful not to think you are in the clear too fast. Fog will normally come in patches.
• ICE and SNOW: this weather also calls for low beam lights. Take extra precautions and drive slowly. Try not to break suddenly, this can cause you to lose control as the roads are prone to be more slippery. When turning or using breaks, do so gradually to avoid skidding.
• RAIN: take extra precautions by driving slower than normal. Leave more room in between you and the car in front of you. Make sure your windshield wipers are working properly.

3. Do not drive while impaired

This should come as an obvious but unfortunately, not everyone sees it this way. The holiday season has the largest increase in drunk driving accidents. During the holiday season 40% of all auto accidents include alcohol. Currently, in the U.S., someone loses their life in a drunk driving accident every 52 minutes. Combine this with the fact that the average person that consumes alcohol will increase their intake by 25% between the time period of Thanksgiving to New Year’s.

These statistics aren’t meant to scare anyone, more to make people aware of the dangers that come with consuming alcohol. If you plan on having a drink, make sure you have a safe ride home either through a friend or a ride share app.

4. Check your coat

Lastly, it is important for people to remember to take off their large winter coats before buckling up. This can be easily over looked, especially if you are in a hurry or just really cold. Large coats can get in the way of a seat belt working properly. This is even move true for children still in car seats. A large puffy coat can make it difficult to harness small children properly. A loose harness, much like a loose seat belt, can be extremely dangerous in the event of a crash. Take the extra step of taking not only your large coat off but also any little ones in the car with you.

1. Drive slow!

Yes, this may seem extremely obvious but you would be surprised how many people forget. If you are in a residential area, treat it as if you are driving in a school zone. This is one of the few times where we recommend driving below the speed limit. If the sun has set be extra careful, kids are not always watching where they are going when candy is on the line. It is your responsibility as a driver to be 100% alert.

2. It’s ok to put your brights more than usual!

Normally this is a big no! While you don’t want to drive around the entire time with your brights on, putting them on in residential areas or around dark corners could potentially save some ones life! All to often, Halloween costumes are dark and scary. They blend in and may not be initially visible to a driver. If you are in a dark area, do not be afraid to put your brights on while driving around.

3. Do not drive aggressively

What every you do, do not speed or try to get around cars. While we suggest to always refrain from driving like an

A-hole, this day is especially important. If you are running late, to bad, you are late. Kids could be around any corner. If a car is stopped or driving slow, its very possibly it because their are children around. Do not try to speed up and get around them.

4. Put the phone away

This is another very obvious thing everyone should be doing while driving safely on Halloween. Unfortunately, people do forget that they need to be extra careful and get distracted by something on their phone. We suggest putting the phone away or having an automated “I am driving” text send until you are safely stopped.

5. Do not drink and drive, not even a little!

Holiday weekends bring out the worst and by the worst we mean drunk drivers. Please don’t be one of these people. Avoid drunk driving on Halloween and get a designated driver, Uber, taxi or Lyft. Make sure your friends do the same. Do not let anyone drink and drive.

6. Be extra cautious at cross walks and intersections

Make sure you come to a complete stop, take a couple seconds and then go when the area is clear. It is also a good idea to keep the radio turned down in areas like this. Make sure you don’t hear anyone coming or going on the streets before driving through an area.

7. Be careful backing up! Rear view mirrors and some back up cameras are too tall to spot small children

Me extremely careful backing up! Go extra slow to make sure you are all the way clear. If you have someone in the car with you, it is not a bad idea to ask them to get and check for you just to make sure.

8. If you are driving in costume make sure you have 100% visibility

Everyone loves a good costume. The more elaborate that better. But, this is not always true when driving. If your costume includes some sort of mask or head piece, wait to put it on until after you have arrived at your destination. Do take a change, even if you think you can drive with it. If it even partial is in your line of vision, take it off while driving.

While all of this may seem like common sense to some about driving safely on Halloween, it unfortunately isn’t to everyone. Pedestrian injuries happen every year and it is our job as the drivers to make sure we are doing everything we can to stop this. Designated Drivers

Having a friend in your group stay sober so they can be your designated driver is great, but does that really ever happen?  Well, statistics say that it does work approximately 75% of the time.  What happens the other 25% of the time?  Your dd may have 1 or 2 drinks early on and think that the alcohol will be gone from their system prior to driving, this is definitely risky, but if the dd has knowledge of how they are affected by alcohol, they may be able to pull this off safely.

The cost of a DWI

The DWI costs can vary from state to state, in Texas a first time offense can cost up to $20,000.  At that price a ride share at $20 bucks seems darn cheap.  Something to think about is not just the DWI fine itself, but all the ancillary charges associated with it, such as;

• Court fines, surcharges and costs
• Lawyer fees
• Time spent in jail or prison (loss of income)
• Bail bonds
• Driver’s license suspension
• Community service (do you dream about picking up trash on the roadside?)

Top 10 states with the worst drivers

States with bad drivers were ranked according to a number of factors. This list includes but is not limited to: careless driving, number of fatalities and drunk driving incidents.

1. New Mexico (tied for 1st)

1. Texas (tied for 1st )

3. Montana

4. South Carolina

5. Louisiana

6. Alabama (tied for 6th)

6. Hawaii (tied for 6th)

8. Arizona

9. Oregon

10. Nevada

Each of the above states ranked as dangerous areas for drivers. Most all were ranked due to speeding and distracted driving. Hawaii was considered one of the worst when it comes to breaking the speed limit. In fact, just over 48% of fatal accidents in Hawaii involved speeding. Hawaii had the highest percentage of speeding-related fatal accidents out of the top 10 states. South Carolina ranked as one of the worst for careless and/or distracted driving. This is due to the state having the largest number of cyclist and pedestrian deaths. Texas and New Mexico, tied for 1st both had the largest number in fatal car crashes. As well as, a high cyclist and pedestrian death rate. Texas also had one of the highest alcohol related fatal incidents.

What do all these states have in common?

While some states problems revolve around speeding and DUI’s (cough* Texas), all of them had distracted and/or careless driving listed as a reason for the number of road fatalities. Distracted driving is a huge issue. Especially when considering the number of cyclist and pedestrians being hit by vehicles. This number has steadily increased year after year.

The easiest answer to this problem is for everyone to put down their phones! But we all know that just saying this does not mean it happens. Most everyone knows they shouldn’t be texting and driving but yet people continue to do it anyways. Some easy suggestions to help you get off your phone is to make an automated response while driving. Most smart phones can sense when you are in a moving vehicle and can be set to an automated reply.

• For example on an iPhone: go to settings – go to Do Not Disturb- set Do Not Disturb to “while driving mode”. If you want to set an auto reply while in Do Not Disturb: go to Do Not Disturb- Auto Reply- type in your Auto Reply that you are currently driving and will respond when done.

Tips for driving in a winter storm

1. Get your car ready

Getting your vehicle ready before taking off is key! Make sure to defrost windows and remove ice from any covered areas. Always try to remove the snow from your hood as well! Removing the snow from your hood will prevent it from falling and blocking the view from other vehicles driving behind. Another handy tip, keep your windshield wipers fresh. If it has been a couple years since they have been replaced, it may be time.

2. Keep your distance and slow down while driving in Texas snow!

We go over the appropriate amount of distance in our course but, when conditions are bad these need to be even more exaggerated! You should allow around 3-4x as much space as you normally do. This comes out to be Around 8-10 seconds behind a vehicle. An eight-ten second following distance means your car should pass an object (like a road sign) eight-ten seconds after the car in front of you passes it.
This is by far the most common mistake we see. Driving to fast and tailgating a vehicle is one of the leading causes of accidents during a storm. Even with the appropriate snow tires (which most of us do not have in the lone star state) a vehicle can not stop as quickly as it can under normal conditions. If you do find yourself in need to break, try to avoid slamming on them in order to prevent skidding. Also, reminder to never use your cruise control while in there types of road conditions!

3. Steering over breaking

Deciding if you need to break of steer away from an accident is different from every situation. We check out what AAA Texas had to say about how people can best decide what to do in theses situations.
“Some driving situations require abrupt action to avoid a crash or collision and in winter conditions the decision to steer or brake can have very different outcomes. When traveling more than 25 mph, AAA Texas recommends steering over braking to avoid a collision in winter-like conditions, as less distance is required to steer around an object than to brake to a stop. In slick conditions, sudden braking can lead to loss of vehicle control. However, sometimes steering is not an option. Braking on slippery surfaces requires you to look further ahead and increase following and stopping distances. Plan stopping distances as early as possible and always look 20-30 seconds ahead of your vehicle to ensure you have time and space to stop safely.”

4. Keep an emergency kit, just in case

We all know Texas weather can be unpredictable. It is never a bad idea to keep an emergency kit in your truck just in case! Good things to pack in your kit are warning flares and reflective triangles, a bag of kitty litter or sand for traction, extra clothes, gloves, hand warmers, hats and thermal blankets.

5. Don’t forget your basic driver safety!

Reminder to not forget your basics! Remember to always wear your seat belt! This was is a non negotiable. Stay off your phone while during. Make all lights are working and keep them on while driving in a snow storm. Check your tire pressure and your car battery! Both of these tend to have issues during sudden changes of temperature.
