AirCheck Texas offers car repair assistance if your vehicle is in need of repair to pass the annual emissions test. You may qualify for up to $600 in vehicle repair assistance from the AirCheck Texas Drive a Clean Machine Voucher Program if you meet certain income requirements. In addition, your vehicle must also meet other criteria. It must have failed an emissions test within 30 days of applying, must have a current registration and has been registered in your county for at least 12 of the 15 months preceding your application, and has passed the safety portion of the DPS motor-safety and emissions inspection. And, it must be driven (not towed) to the inspection station.
If you meet this AirCheck Texas inspection criteria, you will be eligible to receive a voucher worth up to $600 for emissions-related repairs or retrofits performed at a participating emissions repair facility.
And, it gets even better! You may also be eligible for vehicle replacement assistance. If you meet income requirements, and your car is at least 10 years old and runs, has a current registration, and passed a safety inspection within 15 months of application. If you meet all of these requirements, you are eligible to receive a voucher for $3,000 for a car or truck no more than three years old, not to exceed the cost of $35,000. Or a $3,500 voucher towards the purchase of a hybrid vehicle up to three years old, not to exceed the cost of $45,000. There are also certain model requirements and it must have no more than 70,000 miles on it.
So, it’s nice to know there’s help out there in the Lone Star State. Other states may have similar programs. Check your state’s environmental commission or your state’s department of Motor Vehicles.

Nothing’s worse than having expensive auto repairs pop up while you are still making payments on your car. Normal maintenance is expected when your car is new. But, anything from wheel bearings, transmission overhaul and engine replacement can be financially devastating. Like a good relationship that has gone bad. It always starts out with that new car smell and running smoothly and ends in bitterness and despair (or disrepair) if you’re not attentive to the maintenance of that beast.

Preventative maintenance, paying close attention to and not ignoring certain signs could save you a bundle in the long run. For example, a catalytic converter, responsible for controlling your vehicle’s emission system, is over a whopping one thousand dollars to replace. Replacement could have been prevented if the spark plugs and fuel injectors were checked and replaced as needed. Smaller things lead to larger things in the end. And that’s just one example of how keeping up with common auto repairs could have saved you money.

Routine maintenance expenses include brake service, oil changes, battery replacement, tire replacement, windshield wiper replacement, tune-ups, timing belt replacement or drive belt replacement. Of course, if you can educate yourself on how to do some of these yourself, it could save you a bundle if you’re on a budget. From my experience, executives don’t look good with grease under their nails. So, leave the common auto repairs and maintenance up to the professionals. Again, not keeping up routine maintenance usually costs more money to fix. Unexpected costly repairs and possibly costly towing expenses.
Unexpected repairs that usually begin to occur one day after your car is out of warranty (isn’t that an odd coincidence?) include shocks and struts, power steering pump, alternator replacement, starter replacement and sometimes internal engine repairs or transmission issues.

On another note, if you are budgeting and trying to cut down on fuel costs, even a missing gas cap leads to fuel evaporating into the environment. Bad for the environment and bad for your budget.

Ever shopped around for auto warranties? You really got to do your homework, new car warranties, extended auto warranties, bumper to bumper or powertrain, not to mention third-party warranties. But which one will keep your car on the road without having to eat mac and cheese or Raman Noodles for dinner?

I was thinking in my infinite wonder of sometimes stupid ideas, that; wouldn’t it be great if there was Datefax for prospective dates? You know, just like Carfax or Angie’s List, you could look up someone’s reviews of past relationships they’ve been in to see what others have said about that seemingly “hot chick” you met at 24-hour Fitness. Now, of course, it would mostly be biased, heart-broken slander such as, “she never called me back after I asked her to pay the bill at a restaurant called the Mansion on Turtle Creek.” or “she’s a WHORE!!” Somehow the honest, creditable statements without the psycho-babble would have to filter through. One could even predict how many feet in distance the other would have to stay away from according to the protective order, once they became an ex.

All this made me think what would my Datefax report say about me? I contacted my high school sweetheart and my ex-wife through Facebook and the last phone number listed on the form from the Attorney General’s Office to get an honest (no matter how brutal) statement from my past wonderful relationships that sometimes ended in a police report. Not to mention that one that ended with her throwing an appliance at me and yelling “thanks for ruining my life!!” My ex-wife said “I’m sorry…I’m just not witty enough to come up with anything” and my high school girlfriend said she will get back to me. Hmmm, maybe they just don’t want to be reminded of what they lost, yeah…that’s it! Here is what my current girlfriend would say; “He’s a warm, passionate Latino who puts my feelings first.” I’m sure that would change if we broke up!

Back to the car warranties; there are two different basic types of warranties, new car warranty, and extended auto warranty. The new car warranty has a “bumper-to-bumper” which includes everything except “wear products” such as brakes and tires. A marriage warranty would replace sagging breasts with implants or male organ impotence with battery operated machinery. There is also the “powertrain” warranty, which includes the engine and transmission, anything that makes the car move, except a lead foot. The extended auto warranty, aka “factory warranty” also includes bumper-to-bumper. Either way make sure you do some research before buying a warranty, not to mention the Carfax report and having a vehicle checked out by a mechanic before you buy that used car. By mechanic, I mean a certified A.S.E. (National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence) mechanic, not some hillbilly who “fixes things.” although Hank/Bubba usually accepts payment in the form of cash or cases of Natural Light.

Join me again next week and until then…

Take care and be safe-
Danny Keaton
