I’ve written several blogs over the years about my dislike for camera lights. And, I am happy to say that as of June, Red Light Cameras are banned in Texas.

The Good and Evil of Camera Lights

I say good riddance to camera light tickets! As my niece would say, they have just yee’d their last haw! I had received two tickets for blowing through a solid yellow light. Of course, solid yellow sounds much better than a red light. Most drivers have gotten camera light tickets for a rolling stop (while taking a right on red or at a stop sign). Now, I’m not just off my meds when I say that some traffic lights are just way too short. And one certainly should never slam on the brakes at a yellow light for fear of being rear-ended by other drivers who are planning on making that light as well. Plus, foregoing a $75 fine by beating the light is pure satisfaction.

Some drivers believe that the camera lights prevent accidents. But, I would vouch for those other drivers that would agree that most of us goose it to get through a solid yellow light before it turns red and, of course, that factors into high-impact crashes in intersections.  So, adios camera lights! That’s the last mug shot you are getting of me! (Or, a mug shot of someone else driving my stupid car).

So What Can We Expect Now?

So, this is how it’s going to play out. This new law will actually take effect on September 1st. This will allow communities more time to complete any contracts they have with companies that install and monitor their camera lights. Some cities will stop processing violations immediately, while others will still expect to receive revenue from violations already issued. These communities have the option to terminate their contracts immediately, but some may still have to pay early termination fees. So it may in their best interest to keep their camera lights activated to receive revenue to pay these fees.

I have always been curious about why rolling through a stop sign is called rolling stop, or a California roll (my favorite sushi, btw). I’ve even heard someone call it a Hollywood stop. Now, I have resided in California. And, as I recall, everyone stopped. Or, perhaps I was too busy rolling through a stop sign to even notice.

So here’s the answer. Apparently, one of the most common traffic tickets issued to California drivers is for the rolling stop. When drivers approach a stop sign, they are supposed to come to a complete stop. Not fully stopping can pose a danger to other drivers as well as to pedestrians. That’s why police are cracking down on those of us rollers. After all, if there are no other cars in an intersection, there is no one to completely stop for, right? So, it’s safe. You actually yielded. But your car didn’t “settle” behind the crosswalk line before you left the stop sign or turned right at a red light. So, more police officers are stopping cars that roll through stop signs and red lights without completely stopping. These tickets are costly and can jack up your insurance rates by adding points to your driving record. To remove these points, you can attend a defensive driving school. And the traffic fine should also be reduced if you attend a class. If you have camera lights in your neck of the woods, a majority of those are a result of a rolling stop at an intersection. But those are a civil offense, like a parking ticket and will not go on your driving record. Those affect your registration (license plate), not your driver license.

As a driver, you need to know that speeding is not the only common moving violation now. Coasting through a stop sign or red light instead of making a full stop could result in an accident which is why rolling stop violations are taken very seriously.

No Cop, no stop. That seems to be the trend these days. Rolling through a stop sign or rolling through a red light to take a right turn is also referred to as a California rolling stop or a California roll. Coincidentally, that’s my favorite Sushi. Drivers Education instructors teach new drivers to count three seconds before leaving a stop sign or taking a right turn at a red light. Although the law does not require that you stop for a certain amount of time, the law requires that your car settles. But three seconds will insure that your car has settled and will keep you from getting a citation. Some instructors teach students to count five seconds. But I believe three seconds is adequate. If you make someone behind you wait for an extra two seconds, you’re the Devil. At the very least, they may honk at you, hoping to wake you from your slumber. Or, thinking you may be finishing up a text message, they may twist on you and ignite a road rage fueled gun battle. And people do pull guns on each other over trivial things such as this. Now with new concealed carry laws, nearly everyone will be carrying a gun. Maybe we’ll even start seeing gun racks with rifles in the back window of pick-up trucks again, just like back in the 70’s. Not in all states, though. No such gun laws exist in California. So, perhaps in Northern California, we’ll start seeing wine racks in the back window of pick-up trucks. It’s just a thought…
Typically, citizens who get a camera light bill in the mail from a photo-enforced intersection, aren’t blowing through a red light. They are usually taking a right turn on red and rolling through the red light. So, teaching new drivers to count three seconds to make certain their car has settled has certainly saved them from getting cited for a California roll through a stop sign, having their insurance rates increase due to those citations, and possibly even preventing them from causing a crash.
So, don’t forget, even if there is no Cop, you still need to come to a complete stop. It will, at the end of the day, save you money, and grief and maybe even save your life.

Citation Nation – How I Got a Texas Traffic Ticket! https://dev.comedydefensivedriving.com/citation-nation-how-i-got-a-traffic-ticket/ Mon, 16 Jul 2012 15:47:05 +0000 http://comedydefensivedriving.com/blog/?p=2318 I just received my first citation in many, many years. I just received my first citation in many, many years. The secret to my clean driving record is, I drive like a nervous chihuahua looking out for cops. And, no, I’m not mad at the cop, although he was a weenie. You know, the type that really wants to say “Ha Ha” but holds back because he’s trying to be somewhat professional. I’m sure that I deserve a fine, and it was way overdue. In hind sight, I should have told him “You should have seen how fast I was speeding earlier, officer” but I didn’t. I didn’t even tell him that I teach defensive driving because I didn’t have time for him to give me a lecture. The sad thing is, I do know better. And, I wasn’t actually speeding. What I did is, I took a right turn at a stop sign and didn’t come to a complete stop. Some call it a California roll or rolling stop. According to law, in order for your car to come to a complete stop, it has to “settle.” Counting three seconds before you leave a stop sign or before you take a right on red will assure your car has actually settled and save you (and by you, I mean me)…around $215…what???…for a California roll? So, I suppose if you have spinners on your wheels, it looks like you never stop. As I indicated, the law says that your car has to settle, not that you have to stop for three seconds. But, it would be a good habit to get into so you don’t get a ticket for it. Perhaps I got tripped up because I was bragging that I haven’t gotten a ticket in a long, long time. I see other people bragging about it and they get three tickets in a row, like celebrity deaths. It’s like the karma monkey trips them up for bragging about it.
So, I must have done something to upset the balance of my karma, because, so far this year, I have gotten not only this ticket, I also have received a camera light ticket and have had my car towed. I’m considering taking the bus. With the price of gas, tolls, insurance and anxiety medication, it may be less expensive in the long run to take a cab or a bus. You rarely see those drivers being pulled over by the police, do you?
