I once knew a Palm Reader who said she was having transmission troubles. So, when she read my palm, her predictions were that I was going to live a long life, my love line was good and strong, and I was destined to be a rodeo clown…what? Although my life revolves around clown-like behavior, of which has gotten me in trouble many times, I haven’t been to a rodeo in years. Later on, when she was packing up her crystal ball, she said that what she meant was, her vehicle was having transmission troubles…not her. So, there was really no excuse for a really bad palm reading that I paid $15 for now, was there? Perhaps, due to the costly repairs she was about to face, she needed the $15 more than I did.

If she was really that good at reading the future, wouldn’t she would have already noticed the warning signs that her transmission was failing? Here are a few of those indications:

  • If your car is leaking black or pink oil (i.e. if your garage floor looks like a Jackson Pollock painting).
  • If your car is making a knocking, pinging sound.
  • If your “check engine” light is on.
  • If you smell something burning under your hood.
  • If your car takes its time shifting gears (especially noticeable when the engine is cool).
  • If your car seems to be stuck in neutral, even when you step on the gas.
  • If your clutch seems to drag.

First, check your transmission fluid level. It would also be a good idea to just take to your mechanic and have him check it out to see if it’s going to be a serious issue that requires more than topping up your fluid levels. Perhaps your mechanic has a better read on your car’s future than your own personal clairvoyant.

Until next week…

Labor Day Travel

Labor Day has a whole new kind of meaning for those of us who have given birth. Why don’t they have a day for us? Oh, that’s right, they do. It’s called Mother’s Day. Or, “CPS Day” for some of us. Here’s a little nugget of knowledge to hang on to. Did you know that CPS will babysit for FREE! And, if you play your cards right, they will babysit for YEARS! But some of you mothers already know that. I am curious, why doesn’t Mothers Day ever come on a Monday? And why isn’t it a paid holiday, and a long week end? That way, mothers that slur can start celebrating at 5:00 p.m. on Friday and stay in the celebratory mode until late Monday evening?

Drinking on long week ends makes Labor Day travel even more of a risky venture. Not only are there drunk drivers on the roads but also hungover drivers with the brown bottle flu. Drivers with slow reflexes, anger issues and some with a death wish. Surely you’ll see some of them weaving and drifting their way back home. That has to be tough on the kiddos being towed behind the car in your boat. They thought it would be all fun and games. You thought it would be an excellent form of punishment. After all, you are the parent…the adult…the decision maker.

The American Red Cross offers tips for safe Labor Day travel. Be well rested and alert, use your seat belts, observe speed limits and follow the rules of the road. If you plan on drinking alcohol, designate a driver who won’t drink. The Red Cross also offers other tips for road trip safety.

• Give your full attention to the road. Avoid distractions such as cell phones.
• Don’t follow another vehicle too closely.
• Use caution in work zones.
• Make frequent stops.
• Clean your vehicle’s lights and windows to help you see, especially at night.
• Turn your headlights on as dusk approaches or during inclement weather.
• Don’t overdrive your headlights.

And remember, each state you travel through has its own traffic laws. In some states, you can’t take a right turn at a red light, nor a left turn at a red light onto a one way road from a one way road. You may also be required to have a license plate on both the back and the front of your car. Keep your insurance card handy. Use your signals no matter what, even if you’re in a designated turn lane. Never cross over a double solid line. And the 10% “cushion” over the speed limit doesn’t always apply. Police say the speed limit sign means what it says. It’s the “limit” and if you go over that limit, they could write you a ticket. Some states now require that you follow the officer to the local courthouse and pay your ticket in a deposit box before leaving their state. This economy has resulted in some sad, desperate measures.

Happy Labor Day travels from Comedy Defensive Driving to you and yours.

Don’t you wish life worked just like your steering wheel on your car? If you saw trouble up ahead on the road of life all you had to do was steer away and that situation was now out of your life.

Significant other bitching and complaining: Steer to the left and go to your ex’s house just for a drink and just to talk.

Boss at work, wanting to know why a deadline was not met: Steer to the right and go to the nearest bar and then to the nearest un-employment office.

Your steering wheel is one of the most important features on your car. Without your car’s “tiller” your vehicle would be rendered useless. And your power steering fluid is the life blood of this cool wheel of life! If your car was made in this millennium, power steering or electronic power steering for the more fanciful car’s, comes as a standard feature. And checking your power steering fluid is as simple as catching herpes on Bourbon Street. First; look underneath your hood and find the belts. The power steering reservoir is a pulley-driven pump, usually plastic or metal as opposed to mosaic tile. The cap of the reservoir will say “power steering” if you drive a Jeep Wrangler bought in California it might say; “power steering, dude or dike” this is so you can’t miss it! Unscrew the cap and check the dipstick, not the one you married but the one on the cap. The dipstick will say “Full Hot” or “Full Cold” check the fluid with the indicators. Add brake fluid as necessary and make sure you use the right kind of fluid for your car. If you are not sure, check the owner’s manual or look online. (power steering fluid?… OF COURSE!) Oh…and one more thing, make sure you close your hood ALL the way, otherwise you might wind-up like a particular dumbass (who maybe writes these blogs) and didn’t latch the hood correctly so it came off as he was driving on a freeway in Fort Worth, Texas….and had to go to Wal-Mart and buy some underwear.

Check in with me again next week and I’ll have some valuaable information. Until then…

Take care and be safe-

Danny Keaton
