How Age Affects Auto Insurance Rates

This is yet another shameless way to promote Defensive Driving. This much I will admit. Not only will you learn about new traffic laws, and a good refresher course on evasive driving, but most insurance companies still offer a three year insurance discount for attending one. We are all well aware that new, inexperienced drivers pay higher auto insurance rates. Those rates typically go down at age 25, with a clean driving record. But once you hit the ripe age of 70, your insurance rates will likely go right back up. I, for one, wanted a better understanding of how age affects auto insurance rates. So I did a little research on the subject.

Since the invention of the automobile and automobile insurance, young male drivers’ insurance rates have always been higher than young women. Boys tend to drive faster and take bigger risks. I suppose that is why. I asked two young men, between 17 and 19 years of age, what they pay for their monthly premium. One said $460 and the other said $416. And, remember, that’s what they pay each month! I thought, thank God I have a daughter and not a son. If I had a son, it would be cheaper to send him to Sweden to get a sex change than it would to put him on my insurance policy.
I have also recently discovered that young men seldom wear seat belts. Why? I don’t know. Maybe it’s just not that cool. But, when asked, they tend to admit that it’s just too darned uncomfortable. My Mother says the same thing. But, I’m not surprised that her generation resists wearing a seat belt, since wearing one was only an option, and not a law until 1986. Actually, my Mother’s exact words are “It’s uncomfortable and will wrinkle her outfit.” Not like going through the windshield won’t put a wrinkle in your outfit, and your head, etc.

So, we know why young drivers pay higher rates. What about insurance rates increasing for elderly drivers? Apparently, age leads to impaired vision, poorer cognitive functioning, changes in physical functioning and typically high use of prescription medications help boost up the rates for these folks.

Of course, what kind of car you drive, where you live and how much you drive factor in to your final rate. So, moral to the story, if you’re between 25 and 70, you should be spending those years celebrating your lower insurance rates. These are your glory years!

Riding in the H.O.V. Lane

Learn about H.O.V. lane rules in Texas with Comedy Defensive Driving! The H.O.V. lane in Texas is for “High Occupancy Vehicles” and that means two or more passengers or one if you ride a motorcycle. The driver, of course, counts as the first passenger, and the second passenger can be a child in a booster seat or car seat. Which, in my opinion, is the safest lane to be in, when cars are weaving in and out of traffic. So, if you don’t have a child, you may want to ask for one for Christmas this year so you can enjoy the convenience of riding in the H.O.V. lane. In California, a pregnant woman in her second trimester can ride in the H.O.V. lane. Again, also safer for the rest of us, since pregnant women are so darned emotional and are usually the ones weaving in and out of traffic.

Using the H.O.V. lanes in Texas as a single occupant is not really putting anyone’s life in danger. It’s all about fuel consumption, emissions, and carpooling. But crossing over the double solid line on a non-controlled H.O.V. or slipping in between the p.v.c. posts on a semi-controlled H.O.V. lane to enter or exit, instead of where you are supposed to enter or exit is very dangerous and both offenses offer a double-whammy of a traffic violation. And, doing a “Texas Exit” through the ditch to exit the freeway is also a hefty fine.

With the mad traffic in Dallas and the lengthy commuting I do, I would gladly pick up a murderous hitchhiker to be able to ride in the H.O.V. lane.

Emergency Vehicle

I was talking to a paramedic about the loudness of an ambulance siren, compared to an automobile horn. An average auto horn is 85 decibels, while an ambulance siren is 120 decibels. According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, regular exposure to 110 decibels or more, for one minute, puts a person at risk for permanent hearing loss. Of course the paramedic didn’t hear a word of it, as a normal conversation is 60 decibels. He’d been a paramedic for many years. So, I think he was reading my lips. The siren of an emergency vehicle, to some, is so startling that it sets them into panic mode. When an emergency vehicle is approaching, from any direction, you must move to the right as far as possible. If you cannot move to the right, just stay put and they will find a way around you. In a situation where there is an intersection, some people will run the red light or take a right turn at the red light to get out of the way of the approaching emergency vehicle. Sometimes this action results in a collision. Thus, requiring an additional ambulance to be dispatched. So, again, if you can’t pull over to the right, just stay put.

He also said that they are required to shut off their emergency lights and siren and slow down to the required 20mph in an active school zone. And, the reason for the lights and siren off is because young children may mistake them as an ice cream truck and dart out into traffic. Maybe I’m gullible. But, I want to believe him. That reminded me of an incident in Chicago. Someone unloaded a gun on a pedestrian. And, while the victim lay bleeding on the sidewalk, five ice cream trucks showed up at the scene before the ambulance arrived. There was a crowd gathering and it was certainly hot outside. What better opportunity to make a sale? When the ambulance did arrive, it was impossible for them to get past the ice cream trucks to park near the victim.

As I recall, the ambulance siren sounded nothing like the “Camptown Races” so, again, perhaps the paramedic was yanking my chain about children in a school zone thinking the ambulance may be an ice cream truck. Most kids get dropped off at the door now. Not many walk to school anymore. I told my daughter that my sisters and I would walk to school or ride our bikes to school every day. She said “Didn’t Grandma love you?” Which, if you think about it, totally makes sense. Now, if you let your kids walk to school, they may not come home. So, if you really do love them, you take them to school. Many things have changed since I was a kid. Since September last year, the violation for overtaking a school bus (passing a school bus with the red lights flashing) is now a whopping $1,250.00. All child safety issues are high price tickets. Speeding in an active school zone and exceeding the 20mph (if you were going any slower, you’d be in reverse). Talking on a cell phone in a school zone (unless you hit someone, then you’ll need that phone to call an ambulance). Kids are more important than when I was a kid. Heck, they have seat belts in their buses now and everything!

Independence Day Holiday

Happy Independence Day holiday! I love, love, love being an American. Yes, I like to throw the word LOVE around like they throw diet pills around at a Weight Watchers meeting. One word that I have sworn off is the word HATE. And there…I just used it. So, I am a liar and a hater. And I will be getting professional help for both. I must say, though, I really do hate driving. Especially with the hateful traffic we have here in Texas. It seems like they’re doing construction on all of the freeways at the same time. So now, your alternate route is “damn!” Road rage is on the rise with more people waving the finger at each other on a regular basis. Apparently that’s what the sunroof is for. And, if you can drive with both knees, you can flip someone off with both hands. People are talented, aren’t they? They should just put Prozac into the water system here.

My Aunt Sally is currently on a road trip to Austin from Illinois. She doesn’t know what she’s in for. Just the trip from Dallas to Austin used to take around 3 hours (another half an hour if you stop for kolaches at the Czech Stop in West, Texas). Most of the stretch on I-35 is only two lanes wide now, due to construction. Currently, if you drive to Austin from Dallas, you leave the house clean-shaven. And by the time you get to Austin, you have a full grown beard! And my Aunt Sally is at the age where, even as a female, she could totally grow a full beard. I’ve seen it…and it’s creepy.

With the Independence Day holiday approaching, taking a road trip can be a fun adventure and a costly one. Not only do you have to figure in gasoline expenses and time, but you also need to do a little research before you begin your journey. Knowing the laws in the states you will be passing through may save you from hefty traffic fines. Being from Illinois, she may not know that in Texas you can take a right turn at a red light. But your car has to settle before taking your right turn. You can also take a left turn at a red light from a one-way street, onto a one-way street. Here, you can only occupy the H.O.V. lane in Texas if you have two or more people in the car. There is currently no state law in Texas about cell phone usage or texting while driving. But there are city ordinances that vary from city to city. In the Lone Star State, you can only litter with ice, water and chicken feathers. And the police will certainly be setting up road blocks for drunk drivers throughout the Independence Day holiday weekend. And, I’m certain there are many other laws that differ from Illinois law that are too plentiful to list here. Not to mention the laws in Missouri and Oklahoma which she will be passing through. Something in the law books about cousins and animal husbandry, I’m sure. (You didn’t think for a minute that, as a Texan, I wasn’t going to take a shot at Oklahoma, did you?)
