With the high price of fuel, I find myself spending a lot of time just driving around aimlessly searching for the best gas prices. That, in itself, is a waste of fuel. I don’t want anyone to get the wrong idea and think that I’ve been “sniffing” too much fuel here. I can’t win for losing. Following a few easy driving and maintenance tips could save enough to off-set some or all of this extra cost for driving around and comparison shopping.

Gas Saving Tips

Here are a few fuel economy tips we may all want to implement:
* A little extra maintenance certainly keeps the repairman away. Unless you like the rugged good looks of your repairman. Then, by all means, keep doing what you’re doing. But, if you keep your engine properly tuned-up, it is one of the most important gas saving tips.
* Tuning up a car that is noticeably out of tune or has failed an emissions test can improve its gas mileage by an average of 4 percent. Something more serious, such as a faulty oxygen sensor can improve your mileage by as much as 40 percent.
* Keeping your tires properly inflated can improve your gas mileage by up to 3.3 percent. The proper tire pressure for your vehicle is usually found on a sticker in the driver’s side door-jam or in the glove box. It will also be in your owner’s manual.
* Use the recommended grade of motor oil, too. You can improve your gas mileage by 1 to 2 percent by using the manufacturer’s recommended grade of motor oil.
* Also keep your vehicle properly aligned. If your vehicle’s wheels are not perfectly aligned, they cause additional friction with the road. This increases fuel consumption. Aligning your vehicle will also increase your tires’ tread life. Replacing tires is yet another expense you certainly don’t need. Just ask your repairman/boyfriend how he feels about alignment. But first, lock the door so he can’t run away.

The most important way to save gas while driving is to drive the speed limit. I know it’s hard to do, especially when the flow-of-traffic is traveling much factor that the actual posted speed limit. If you’re driving the speed limit and everyone else is going 10mph faster, people act as if you’re driving like a little old lady. Speeding or rapid acceleration wastes gas:
* It can lower your gas mileage by whopping 33 percent at highway speeds and by 5 percent around town.
* Driving the speed limit will also save you in speeding tickets.
* Use cruise control whenever you can to help maintain a constant speed, which will use considerably less gas.
* If you have a car with an overdrive gear, that will also help save on fuel consumption.
* And remove any extra weight you may be carrying. But not the repairman/boyfriend…you may need him.

But all joking aside, the best way to save gas is to stay out of the left-lane (aka: the “Passing Lane”) on the freeway. Why? Because if you’re clogging up the passing lane and the flow-of-traffic is traveling faster then you, then you are impeding the masses and they will spend more gas trying to accelerate around you. Now you’re waisting other peoples gas as well… I mean, its not like everyone is going to slow down because you’re out there driving the speed limit! So be smart, stay as far to the right as possible… and know you’re doing your part to save gas.

Until next week…

Have you lived your entire life, never doing a darned thing for anyone? Well, shame on you and here’s your chance to make it up to everyone. In the end, you could do so by gifting them with life. By donating your organs and tissue you can give up to 8 people a fresh lease on life.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the premier go-to folks for organ donor awareness, there are currently about 115,655 people waiting for an organ transplant. Coincidentally, I believe that is how many people were in line ahead of me at Starbucks this morning. Proof that not only is coffee addicting, but they must put something in it there. I said this to the guy in line behind me. He said “Yea…caffeine, lady, that’s what they put in it!”

Sadly, of those 115,655 people waiting for an organ to be donated, 18 will die each day waiting for that organ that will never come. And, there are donations you can make even while you are still alive. Such as a kidney or part of a liver or pancreas. And, with time, a liver will regenerate itself in the donor. Cool, eh? Just like in an old Science Fiction movie. Modern medicine has certainly come a long way. So have computers. I remember when people were just talking about computers and internet. And, like everyone else, I was thinking computers and internet?…witchcraft. Heck, they even do hair transplants now. So, if your only affliction is vanity, there you go. Because there’s only so much you can do by combing that hair over the bald spot. The same with bald tires…you can’t just comb the tread over the bald spots…eventually you have to get new ones…tires or follicles.

November is National Bone Marrow Awareness Month. Here’s three steps you can take to help. Register to become an organ donor. Inform family and friends of your decision. And be involved by promoting information about organ and tissue donation. Oh, and there’s a fourth, actually.  Stop drinking so much…you’re ruining that perfect, pink, donatable liver. I should know, that’s my family for you…all heavy drinkers. At our family reunion, everyone brought two coolers. One large cooler for their beer and another smaller cooler containing their back-up liver. To better educate yourself, there are many websites solely devoted to this issue. And, you can take a quiz to see how much you know about organ donor awareness and transplantation awareness at www.medindia.net
There is also a daily quiz you can take at www.organdonor.gov
So do it for others, or do it for yourself. Donate the gift of life.  Or, just go ahead and donate that brain to science. You’re not using it anyway.
Until next week…be considerate of others…give of yourself.

My Daughter will be eligible to receive a license to drive in October. And, quite frankly, I am terrified. She is a horrible little driver. She has her driver training permit and has been practicing…but not nearly enough to gain the experience required to avoid a crash. We haven’t even been on the highway yet. She’s not ready for that kind of scary. And neither am I (apparently, I’m a screamer).

I had heard from other parents of new drivers that there is a program out there that teaches real life emergency avoidance and response techniques, as well as overall driver safety. It’s an invaluable “supplement” for new drivers, in addition to their driver training. The program is called DRIVER’S EDGE (driversedge.org).It is a FREE (that caught your attention, didn’t it?) half-day program for drivers ages 21 and younger.

The program does a national annual tour. So, once registration opens in your area, you need to hop online and reserve a spot immediately, as it is on a first come, first served basis. You can go to their website ahead of time and give them your contact information if you would like to be notified when they plan to teach the program in your area. The registrant must have a valid license or permit to attend.

The program in our area is going to be held at Texas Motor Speedway (how appropriate for my little driver). It is taught by true driving professionals through a unique combination of behind the wheel and classroom experience. And the program was developed to address the unacceptably high number of youth related automobile collisions and fatalities that occur each year.Car crashes are the number one killer of teens in the U.S.And teens are four times more likely to die or be injured in a car crash than older people.Apparently males are twice as likely as females to die or become injured in a car crash.Perhaps that’s why boys’ insurance is higher than girls’ insurance. The crash risk is high during the first year teens drive because they’re newbies behind the wheel…inexperienced drivers.Unlike we seasoned drivers with many years of experience. Most teen crashes occur on the weekends, when teens are too busy having fun to pay attention to their driving. ..also known as distractions.Teens tend to underestimate or not recognize dangerous situations. And teens are more likely to speed, run red lights, make illegal turns, ride with an intoxicated driver, and drive after using alcohol or drugs.I know at least the speeding part is true. When I was a teen, I used to drive like a bat out of hell.I could have wallpapered with my tickets! But, I slowed it down after I had a baby in the car. There’s something about having a tiny, fragile baby in the car that makes one drive like a little old lady. And now that she’s a teenager, I just want to drive off a bridge.Funny how one reverts to old habits.

What Driver’s Edge will offer up?Every student has a chance to get behind the wheel with a professional instructor. These programs are taught by professional racing drivers and professional performance driving instructors. The experience includes evasive lane change maneuvers, ABS braking exercises, panic braking instruction and skid control instruction. In addition to behind the wheel instruction, they will also receive interactive instruction.Local law enforcement will be present to do a mock field sobriety test, compare the effects of impaired and distracted driving, show what to do and how to act if you’re ever pulled over, among other things. They also do a car care module which includes essential car care information, tire safety, proper seating, steering wheel and mirror positions, proper seatbelt usage, distracted driving and other current topics.

And, for those of you with some spare change, what a great charity to donate to.Driver’s Edge is a non-profit organization and public charity dedicated to one simple thing…teaching young drivers what’s not being taught in traditional driver’s education.Their sole mission is to help save lives with their unique and innovative behind the wheel program. And, to continue to be able to offer this program for free, donations are certainly welcome!  And they’re tax deductible.

Until next week…keep those teen drivers safe!

People’s lives can be stressful and when this stress is transferred to driving habits, it can result in offensive driving habits and accidents. Offensive drivers cut people off, speed, and do not follow defensive driving skills. Defensive driving skills are following speed limits, allowing for safe following distances and being able to anticipate other drivers’ intentions. Defensive driving in Texas is important with the number of vehicles on the road to create safer driving conditions for all motorists.

Learning Defensive Driving in Texas

New drivers which undergo drivers’ education courses learn defensive driving in Texas, which teaches them the proper way to drive and operate a vehicle. When people get tickets and get into accidents frequently, the state can require the person to attend traffic school. Traffic school can be taken by anyone voluntarily to improve driving skills or when it is court ordered. Courses are available in classroom settings and online from Comedy Defensive Driving, which uses real comedians to teach people defensive driving skills.

OK this is more of a confession than a blog. Today I was a very bad driver. I need to be spanked…alright, enough of my weird fetishes. I was speeding and weaving in and out of traffic on the freeway like a running back dodging the Dallas Cowboys defense (which would be pretty easy to do.) I was in a hurry to teach a defensive driving class. I know, “isn’t it ironic?” I was running late and my natural reaction was to speed, right? Isn’t that what you do when you are running late? Now I’m not trying to rationalize what I did but at least I wasn’t talking on the cell phone and I used my blinkers when I was cutting people off.

Speeding is a major cause of motor vehicle collisions in the United States, I’m sure you already knew that. But, did you know that most crashes occur as a direct result of people driving too slow? Yes, you slow, Sunday drivers need to get the hell out of the way! I’m not suggesting you speed up to 90mph! You speed demons need to slow down to a reasonable speed, like the speed limit or maybe 5 over, only highly trained drivers like race car drivers and defensive driving instructors can handle the situation with precision driving techniques and acute awareness to the decision making skills needed to pull this off! It’s not the speed that is dangerous, it’s the things that get in your way that causes the danger, like other cars, animals, pedestrians and trees that seems to jump onto the road out of nowhere! Drivers who drive too slow on a highway entrance ramp or driving too slow in the left lane are the cause of major traffic jams due to crashes, which in turn cost you in fuel economy, when you are sitting idle in gridlock.

Last year in the U.S. 33,808 people were killed in crashes and over 2.2 million people injured. Hey, slow down a little bit, don’t be in such a hurry, it’s better to be late than to be dead, right?! Now I need to take my own advice and be a better driver by slowing down and not eating Burger King while driving. Join me again next week and until then…

Take care and be safe-
