Insurance rates are affected by a number of things. Your age is a big factor and insurance is much higher for new drivers under the age of 25. This is especially true for male drivers, so your gender is another important element in determining your insurance rates. When my daughter turned 16 and got her driver license, I put her on my auto insurance policy and my rates more than quadrupled. I thought, “Thank goodness she’s not a boy. How much would my insurance rates have gone up if she was a boy?” Then I did the “math,” and it would have been cheaper to send her to Sweden to get a sex change! Although rates will go down after 25, they will go right back up in your 60’s. So, with old age, all I have to look forward to is getting shorter with osteoporosis and having my insurance rates go up. I should just drive off a bridge (unfortunately, they’re doing road construction on local bridges here). Your credit score, whether you are married or single, own or rent your home as well as length of time you were insured with your previous agency all play a big part in determining your insurance rates. So, what measures can you take to help in reducing insurance rates? Here’s a list that may come in handy, but remember, as stated above, longevity is important, but that “loyalty” should go both ways, right?

• Drive carefully
• Observe traffic rules and speed limits to avoid moving violations and accidents
• Work with an independent insurance agent who partner with a wide range of companies to find you the best combination of price and coverage for you
• Take advantage of billing plan discounts
• Take a driver safety course (defensive driving course)
• Inquire about good student discounts, if applicable to you
• Choose a higher deductible
• Enroll in a telematics program like Progressive’s SnapShot or Safeco’s Right Track as your safe driving habits can help you save up to 30% of the premium
• Bundle your insurance plans (home, boat, auto) and save as much as 25%

Insurance rates in my state have increased due to weather claims and it has also been affected by the plethora of claims made due to accidents resulting from texting while driving. Mine went up a whopping 40% due to no fault of my own. Perhaps I should take my own advice and take measures to reduce my insurance rates to a manageable amount. And, while I’m at it, I should kick my 21 year old off of my insurance policy, because yikes-ola!

Until next week…

Here in Texas, you absolutely must have automobile liability insurance, or what they call “financial responsibility” … it’s the law. Two things that stay on your driving record indefinitely are a DWI (fair enough…that makes sense) and no proof of liability insurance. And it stays on your driving record…forever! We also have what they call the TexasSure program. Through this system, the police already know if you have liability insurance when they pull you over. If you don’t have your updated insurance card in the car with you, they will likely still write you a ticket. At the very least, you may need to take off work to go to the court house and show them your proof of financial responsibility. And they will dismiss your ticket but still make you pay a small administration fee. So, hours lost on the job alone will add up, financially. Always keep your updated insurance card in your car.

My insurance, because I am older and hadn’t had a ticket in a long while was only $61 per month. That was for full coverage insurance, which included road side assistance, towing, and many extras. I was pretty happy with that rate, until I added my 17 year old daughter to my policy. I added her to my policy online…with my fingers crossed. But my rate still more than quadrupled. So I am currently shopping around for better insurance rates. I’ve noticed that most of the larger insurance agencies are pretty competitive in price, right now. So I found a similar policy which is a much more manageable price for me. It doesn’t send up a red flag to your insurance agency when you shop for rates. And, as stated, you must have insurance. But, you don’t have to pay Neiman-Marcus prices for your automobile insurance. Besides, who wants to spend a bunch of extra money on insurance when you have better things to spend your money on (like my buddy Jack Daniels). So it doesn’t hurt to compare quotes now and then.

I have found that the best way for keeping my money in my own pocket is to follow my own mantra…or what I like to call “tips for getting better insurance premiums”:
1. Drive like a nervous Chihuahua, looking out for cops, and most importantly distracted drivers (ones on their phones).
2. Take a defensive driving class every three years for an insurance discount.
3. Keep your tires, fluids, brakes and all in top condition to prevent freak accidents.

A defensive driving class may cost you a little money and a little time, but will afford you a three year insurance discount, typically 10% (but the discount can be anywhere between 8% and 15%). That’s a nice savings, and every bit helps in this economy. Plus, you will learn about new laws and tips to be a better, safer driver. You will be able to rub shoulders with other bad drivers…uh, I mean students…and compare notes. Also, communicating with your insurance agency about tips for a better insurance premium will also help. They will be thrilled that you have chosen to take a defensive driving class. It just makes sense that they would prefer to insurance a better, safer driver.

A new study from Insurance.com shows how much a parent’s insurance policy can go up when a teenage driver is added.

When a teenager is added to the parent’s policy, according to the study, the annual insurance premium for a one-car family while for a two-car family it generally jumps about 58 percent and for a three-car family, about 62 percent!!!

This is because drivers ages 15 to 19 tend to get into MORE accidents than older drivers and have little driving experience.

So how can parents of teenage drivers reduce the insurance costs? comparing rates from different companies; making sure your teenager is driving a safe car that is inexpensive to insure; and asking for DISCOUNTS if your child gets good grades in school, takes certain DRIVING CLASSES or drives a vehicle with a monitoring device installed. A lot of courses out there will help reduce your car insurance, make sure to ask your car insurance provider first.

The data is based on an analysis of car insurance quotes provided by Insurance.com were users for all levels of liability coverage from October 2009 through September 2010 provided their information. Collision and comprehensive coverage was not included in the analysis.

How much did your insurance jump when your child started driving? How have you lowered the cost, if at all?
If your insurance provider agrees in your policy for insurance reduction by taking defensive driving classes, well… Look no further, at
