Daun Thompson has spent years acting in both film and theatre which has been paramount in launching her onto the comedy stage (incidentally, without a helmet, resulting in a nasty concussion). Being a funny girl is a full time job. A job that she hopes that one day will come with dental benefits and a 401K. Unlike her work, she is biodegradable, yet flame retardant. And gentle to the touch. Her goal in life??? For strangers to approach her and ask "Didn't you used to be somebody?"
In the late 1980's she cut her teeth at the Velveeta Room on 6th Street in Austin, Texas ... the original room with the stripper pole. From there, she moved to northern California and worked with many comedy icons, like Mitch Hedberg, Marc Maron, Colin Quinn, Vic Dunlop, Huck Flyn, Michael Mancini, Doug Ferrari, Shang and Brian Posehn.
Daun has been a licensed driver safety instructor and trainer with Comedy Defensive Driving for over 9 years. Her knowledge of driving safety laws keeps her readers informed and engaged with her blog adventures. She still continues to do stand-up comedy, sometimes in a reclining position...just to be different.
I must admit, I’m pretty good at avoiding things. Mostly, I avoid bill collectors. And, I’ve been an expert at avoiding marriage. But the one avoidance that makes me really beam…I have avoided having an automobile collision for almost 17 years. I’ve had my share of collisions over the years. The last two were both…
With schools opening back up for business between August 27th and September 2nd, I will see a fair share of school zone violations in my defensive driving class very soon. Remember to pay attention and look out for kids in school zones. I will see violations such as speeding through an active school zone, not…
Just a few more weeks and kids are going back to school. I remember when I was a kid. Summer breaks were longer. And when it was time to go back to school, my mom would take us school shopping and buy us all new clothes and school supplies. That way she would trick us…
Going to the SPCA today inspired me to write this week’s blog about leaving dogs in a hot cars. I left my Great Dane in a hot car one time and when I returned, he was a chihuahua. Thank you. Good night. Try the veal! No, but seriously, this is no laughing matter. Pets are…
Young drivers, in construction-heavy, rush hour traffic, are paying little mind to driving courteously. And that may be why a third of all drivers accused of road rage are in their 20’s and are responsible for more accidents than any other age group. Take a defensive driving class so that when you think: are young…
Ever ride in the car with someone and they’re all over the road trying to send or read a text message? Speak up! If a texting driver is making you nervous but you’re not quite sure how to bring the topic up, try these suggestions: If you really don’t feel comfortable telling a driver to…
I just received my first citation in many, many years. The secret to my clean driving record is, I drive like a nervous chihuahua looking out for cops. And, no, I’m not mad at the cop, although he was a weenie. You know, the type that really wants to say “Ha Ha” but holds back…
Katherine Lee Bates was a poet and literature professor. She wrote the verses that became known as “America The Beautiful.” One memorable line “Amber Waves of Grain” was inspired by her train journey across the midwest, my original stomping ground. This poem was paired with a hymn to commemorate the Fourth of July. I learned…
Not everyone on the road is a good driver. But you could try to be if you drive defensively, you’re alert and ready for whatever comes your way. Being cautious without being timid and not putting your fate in the hands of other drivers will make you a better driver. According to the U.S. Department…
I learned a new word today, neckbeard. A neckbeard is apparently the result of being too busy to be bothered with grooming. At the cost of razor cartridges, I must admit I have considered the legbeard and even beardpits (sounds like a legendary pirate, doesn’t it?…arrrgh). But, it’s not a very Disney-esque visual, is it. …
